FAQs

What Hypnosis Is Not

When most people hear the word “hypnosis,” they picture Svengali, swinging pocket watches, or a stage hypnotist telling someone to bark like a dog or cluck like a chicken. Stage hypnosis is entertainment, and even there, the volunteers are people who chose to come up on stage and play along.

Clinical hypnotherapy is something very different. In hypnosis you are aware and in full control of your mind and body, it is NOT mind control. You can hear, speak, move, and open your eyes whenever you like; your body simply feels relaxed and comfortable. You will never be asked to reveal secrets or do anything you don’t want to do. In my practice, hypnosis is used strictly as a tool for healing and positive change.

What Is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a focused state of awareness where the body is fully relaxed, but the mind is awake. This state allows the hypnotherapist to access your subconscious mind where the positive change and transformation you desire for yourself can start to take place through the use of hypnotic suggestions.

Hypnosis is a completely natural state. In fact, we all go in and out of hypnosis throughout the day. Have you ever been driving and missed your exit on the freeway? Or, been deeply absorbed in a movie and forgot you are actually in a room full of strangers watching a projected image of actors on screen? Perhaps you’ve zoned out and daydreamed while someone was talking to you.  All of these are all examples of being in a state of hypnosis.

Does Hypnosis Really Work?

Absolutely. In recent years hypnosis and hypnotherapy has become an accepted medical treatment to address a wide variety of issues and conditions. Researchers and professors in universities such as Stanford, Harvard, and Penn State, just to name a few, have conducted clinical studies in hypnosis and found that hypnosis does in fact alter the brain and can be used for a multitude of conditions. I have been extremely successful in using hypnotherapy to help our clients with a multitude of issues including improving self confidence, helping them to stop smoking, achieving significant weight loss, reducing or even eliminating anxiety. Hypnotherapy is an extremely powerful and effective tool and it’s results are long lasting.

Can Anyone Be Hypnotized?

Nearly everyone can, though people respond in different ways. Some respond best to direct, literal suggestions and others to imagery and inference. Part of your first session is learning which style fits your mind, so the work is built around how you actually think.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

When you are in a hypnotic state, your conscious mind has been relaxed. This allows the hypnotherapist to work directly with your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind holds all of our “programming”, much like a computer.

You can “know” in your conscious mind that you want to make a change and be determined to make that change, but if your “computer is programmed” to keep doing what you are doing it will be nearly impossible to make lasting change unless you change the programming. That’s precisely what hypnotherapy will accomplish. When you change the subconscious programming the behavior follows.

Is Hypnotherapy a Replacement for Therapy or Medical Care?

No. I am a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, not a physician, psychologist, or licensed therapist. My work focuses on vocational and avocational self-improvement, and I do not diagnose or treat medical, dental, or mental health conditions.

Is Hypnotherapy Religious? Will It Conflict With My Faith?

Clinical hypnotherapy is not religious, and sessions are built around your beliefs, not mine. The spiritual and esoteric side of my work is there for clients who ask for it. If you don’t, it never enters the room.

Will Hypnotherapy Work for My Specific Issue?

There is a very high likelihood that hypnotherapy will work for your presenting issue. It is almost impossible to list ALL the possible uses of hypnotherapy but here are examples in which hypnotherapy may help.

What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?

Hypnosis is a very comfortable, peaceful and pleasant feeling. Your body is extremely relaxed but your mind is aware. You will feel a sense of rejuvenation and feel refreshed after a hypnotherapy session.

Will I Lose Control of Myself?

Absolutely not! Hypnotherapy is a way of giving you more control, not less. You cannot be hypnotized unwillingly, and you cannot be prompted to do something that is outside of your moral code or say or reveal anything you do not want to.

Can I Get Stuck in Hypnosis?

No. You can come out of hypnosis any time you choose, and you can no more get “stuck” in it than you can get stuck awake or asleep. I always guide you back at the end of a session, but if I didn’t, you would naturally return to full alertness or drift into ordinary sleep and wake up on your own.

What Falls Outside Your Scope of Practice?

I don’t provide crisis care, diagnosis, or treatment of medical or mental health conditions without a referral, and I don’t use hypnosis to recover memories for legal or investigative purposes. If something you bring to me falls outside my scope, I’ll tell you directly and help you find the right professional.

Is What I Share Confidential?

Yes. What you share in sessions stays private. The only exceptions are the rare situations where the law requires disclosure, such as a serious risk of harm to you or someone else.

When Do I Need a Referral?

If your goal involves a medical, dental, or psychological concern, I’ll ask for a referral from the provider treating it before we begin. That includes things like pain management, physical symptoms, a diagnosed condition, or if you are currently seeing a therapist or psychiatrist for the issue you want to work on.

A referral is usually a short note or form from your provider. With it, I work alongside them so your care stays coordinated. I’m happy to explain what’s needed on your consultation call.

I Want to Uncover Painful Memories from My Childhood. Can Hypnosis Help?

No. Age regression asks a person to go back and “relive” earlier events, and I don’t practice it. Memory isn’t a recording; it’s rebuilt every time we recall it, for all of us, in everyday life. When someone is asked leading or suggestive questions about their past, by anyone, in any setting, what they remember can be shaped by the questions themselves.

This isn’t a theory. During the Satanic Panic of the 1980s and 1990s, “recovered memory” techniques and suggestive questioning led adults and children alike to “remember” abuse and rituals that never occurred, and real families were torn apart.

That’s why I never use my sessions to uncover, confirm, or prove whether a past event happened, including suspected abuse, and why this work is not a tool for legal or investigative purposes. My focus stays on the present and future: changing how you think, feel, and respond now, without digging for buried memories.

Do I Have to Believe in Past Lives To Do Past Life Regression?

No. Some clients experience what comes up as memories of previous lives; others experience it as a symbolic story from the subconscious. Either way, the work focuses on what the experience means for you now and what it can help you understand or release.

Can Someone Hypnotize Me or "Program" Me Without My Knowledge?

No. Hypnosis requires your attention, cooperation, and willingness. It can’t be done to you in secret, it can’t be sent through phones, sounds, or devices, and no one can use it to control your thoughts, movements, or actions against your will. There is no hypnotic “programming” that runs in the background of someone’s life.

If you feel that someone is controlling or monitoring you, that experience can be very distressing, and you deserve real support. A physician or licensed mental health professional is the right place to start. If you believe someone has hacked your devices or committed a crime against you, please contact the police.

Hypnosis recordings and sounds can help you relax or focus when you choose to listen, but they cannot make your muscles move involuntarily or override your control of your body. If you’re experiencing movements you can’t explain, please see a physician so they can look into what’s causing them.

I’ve Had An Alien Encounter or Believe I Was Abducted. Do You Work With This?

I don’t use hypnosis to investigate unusual experiences, such as perceived encounters, unexplained events, or past events you can’t remember clearly, or to determine what did or didn’t happen. If an experience has left you anxious, afraid, or unable to sleep, please start with your physician or a licensed mental health professional. With their referral, I can work alongside them to help you feel calm and steady again.
